 This chart classifies the range in ten categories. The measurements have been taken for a 145 dBm signal, with a Yagui three-element antenna and a 1/4-wavelength antenna.

For instance, in category 7, if we hold the antenna on the hand (1'5-2 metres from the ground) the range is just 2-4 kilometres. If we elevate the antenna to 3-4 metres from the ground (by climbing on to a tree, or by using a pole) we get a 4-8-km range. From a very elevated place (such as a hillock or even a light aircraft) we can get a range of 20-40 kilometres.

The battery life-time is proportional to the frequency and duration of the pulse used.

- If we use both a low frequency and duration     the battery life-time is higher, but it will be harder to find the animal.

- On the other hand, if both the frequency and duration of the pulse are high, the battery life-time is reduced, but the tracking will be easier.
